Registered Psychotherapist
I have long been captivated by people’s inner lives and the the way that we make sense of the world around us. From understanding the passions that animate us to the despairs that sink us I have been drawn to this field by a convergent interest in the arts, philosophy, psychoanalysis and meditation, which all inform the way that I think about human psychology. Studying at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis my interest in human psychology coincided with an approach to psychotherapy that I think is best able to accommodate the full complexity of people’s varied human experiences. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is not a quick fix, but a method to explore and map out the underlying often unconscious factors that are contributing to an individual’s suffering, so that with renewed awareness new pathways may be forged that cause less friction and contribute to a more expansive experience of living. I have been enormously influenced by the psychoanalytic work of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Philip Bromberg and Jean Laplanche amongst others.

Understanding the full context of my patients’ experience of the world is central to my approach to psychotherapy. Taking a page from my experience as meditation practitioner I aim to be present and compassionate, providing lots of space for my patients to speak before intervening. I find it is best to follow the full train of my patients thoughts before presuming to know what ails them. It is in this way that I find that thoughts even the patient was not aware of begin to surface, allowing for greater insight into what was determining the course of their life without them knowing it. Similarly, it may be that thoughts that they had been aware of intermittently became more readily available to consciousness, so that choices can begin to be made in regards to them. As Carl Jung put it, "Until you make the unconscious conscious it will direct your life, and you will call it fate.” I have found that I can be particularly helpful for clients who have felt they have not gone deep enough in therapy and are looking for a place to speak freely, so that they may unpack the complexity of their experience and of their lives.
