Eating disorder therapy Toronto

Anne-Marie Smith, MSW, RSW

Registered Social Worker

I am a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist with nearly 30 years experience in mental health. I hold a Master of Social Work from McGill University and completed advanced training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy through the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society. My clinical experience includes specialized hospital-based mental health programs and private practice, where I have supported adults through a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges. My practice is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy and informed by contemporary psychoanalytic theory, as well as evidence-based approaches. I have experience supporting adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, eating disorders, grief and loss, substance use, self-esteem and identity concerns, and major life transitions. I also have a special interest in working with women navigating midlife, including the emotional and psychological changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Psychodynamic Therapy Toronto

Sessions with Anne-Marie

Meaningful change begins through the experience of being deeply understood and thoughtfully met in the therapeutic relationship. In our initial sessions, we will take time to develop a shared understanding of what has brought you to therapy, your current concerns, your personal history, and the relationships and experiences that have shaped the way you understand yourself and connect with others. Over time, we will explore your emotional world, relational patterns, and the ways past experiences may continue to influence your present thoughts, feelings, and ways of relating. Through this process, we will bring curiosity and compassion to the parts of your experience that may feel difficult to understand, allowing space for greater awareness, integration, and meaningful change. My approach is grounded in contemporary relational psychodynamic therapy, which recognizes the therapeutic relationship as a central part of the healing process. I strive to provide a collaborative, compassionate, and reflective space where you can explore your inner experiences at your own pace and feel supported in bringing forward aspects of yourself that may have been difficult to express or understand. Together, we will work toward deepening self-understanding, strengthening emotional flexibility and capacity, and cultivating an authentic and compassionate relationship to self and others.
