Mental Health Medication
Mental Health Medication Support in Ontario
The Centre for Psychodynamic Insights can offer psychiatric medication support for patients located in Ontario. This service is provided by a psychiatrist and may help patients better understand whether medication could be appropriate as part of their mental health care.
Psychiatric medication can be helpful for some patients experiencing concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, mood instability, attention difficulties, sleep concerns, obsessive thoughts, emotional dysregulation, or other mental health symptoms. Medication is not the right fit for every patient, and recommendations are made based on a careful understanding of the patient’s symptoms, history, goals, and overall treatment needs.
To request a psychiatric assessment at the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights, patients must complete the form at the bottom of this page. This helps our team gather the information needed to begin the intake process.
Patients must also have a referral faxed to us by a family doctor or nurse practitioner.
Referrals can be faxed to: +1 (647) 723-0195
Once the form and referral have been received, our team will review the information and follow up regarding next steps.
For patients who are interested in psychodynamic psychotherapy rather than a psychiatric assessment, a medical referral is not required. Psychodynamic psychotherapy consultations can be booked by patients located anywhere in Canada.
Next Steps
What Is Psychiatric Medication Management?
Psychiatric medication management involves assessing whether medication may be appropriate, reviewing current or past medications, monitoring effectiveness, discussing side effects, and adjusting treatment when clinically appropriate.
This service may include starting a new medication, reviewing an existing medication plan, discussing concerns about side effects, or exploring whether medication should continue, change, or be discontinued under medical supervision.
Medication as Part of a Broader Treatment Plan
Medication can sometimes reduce symptoms enough for patients to feel more stable, focused, or able to engage in daily life. However, medication does not replace psychotherapy.
At the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights, we encourage patients to consider medication as one part of a broader treatment plan. Ongoing psychodynamic psychotherapy can help patients explore the deeper emotional, relational, developmental, and unconscious patterns that may contribute to distress over time.
Patients interested in psychodynamic psychotherapy may book a consultation from anywhere in Canada. Psychiatric medication services are available only to patients located in Ontario and require a referral.
What to Expect During a Medication Consultation
During a psychiatric medication consultation, the psychiatrist will ask about your current symptoms, mental health history, medical history, previous medications, current medications, side effects, family history, substance use, and treatment goals.
The psychiatrist may discuss whether medication is appropriate, what options may be available, what benefits and risks should be considered, and what follow-up may be needed. The appointment is also an opportunity for patients to ask questions and discuss concerns about medication in a supportive clinical setting.
Reviewing Current or Previous Medications
Some patients seek psychiatric medication support because they are already taking medication and want a specialist opinion. Others may have tried medication in the past and want to better understand what happened, why it may or may not have helped, or whether another option should be considered.
A psychiatrist can review medication history, response, side effects, dosage concerns, and treatment goals to help guide next steps.
Medication Is Not Always Recommended
A psychiatric medication consultation does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed. In some cases, the psychiatrist may recommend psychotherapy, further assessment, medical follow-up, lifestyle changes, or other supports before medication is considered.
The goal is to make thoughtful, clinically appropriate recommendations based on the patient’s needs rather than assuming medication is always the answer.
