CPSO Clinical Supervision and Psychiatric Consultation

At the Centre for Psychodynamic Insights, we offer clinical supervision and professional consultation provided by an Ontario psychiatrist for physicians seeking structured guidance, professional development, and support with complex psychiatric and mental health concerns.

Services may include formal clinical supervision for physicians whose practice is subject to supervision requirements established by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO), as well as voluntary consultation for physicians who would benefit from another psychiatrist’s perspective on clinical, ethical, diagnostic, or practice-related matters.

Clinical supervision and consultation are offered virtually throughout Ontario.

Please note: Any formal CPSO-directed supervision arrangement is subject to the individual requirements of the CPSO. The proposed Clinical Supervisor must be approved by the CPSO, and supervision must be conducted in accordance with the applicable undertaking, order, registration condition, or supervision plan.

Clinical supervision involves structured oversight and ongoing assessment of a physician’s practice. Its purpose is to support safe and effective patient care, ensure that the expected standard of practice is being met, and assist the supervised physician in developing or maintaining clinical competence.

Depending on the physician’s individual circumstances and CPSO requirements, supervision may include:

  • Reviewing selected patient records and clinical documentation

  • Discussing assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care

  • Reviewing prescribing practices and medication management

  • Evaluating clinical reasoning and decision-making

  • Discussing risk assessment, capacity, consent, and patient safety

  • Reviewing adherence to professional, ethical, and regulatory expectations

  • Providing educational guidance and constructive feedback

  • Preparing supervision reports or documentation when required

  • Communicating with the CPSO or another approved organization where authorized and required

  • Supporting a physician who is changing their scope of practice or returning to clinical practice

The frequency, format, level, and duration of formal supervision will be determined by the applicable CPSO requirements and the Clinical Supervisor’s assessment of the arrangement.

CPSO Clinical Supervision

Professional consultation is available to physicians who are not subject to formal CPSO supervision but would benefit from confidential discussion with a psychiatrist.

Consultation may focus on:

  • Complex psychiatric presentations

  • Diagnostic clarification and differential diagnosis

  • Psychopharmacology and medication management

  • Treatment planning and clinical formulation

  • Suicide risk, self-harm, violence risk, and patient safety

  • Capacity, consent, and substitute decision-making

  • Challenging clinical interactions

  • Professional boundaries

  • Documentation and record-keeping

  • Ethical or regulatory concerns

  • Coordination of care with psychotherapists and other professionals

  • Managing uncertainty or complexity in psychiatric care

  • Developing or changing a clinical scope of practice

  • Returning to practice following an extended absence

  • Physician wellness and the emotional impact of clinical work

Consultation is collaborative and educational. Unless a separate formal agreement is established, the consulting psychiatrist does not assume responsibility for the physician’s patients and does not become the Most Responsible Physician.
